Are hemp seed foods legal in Australia?

Yes, totally! After years of being banned for ridiculous reasons, changes were made to Australia’s Food Standards Code in 2017 finally enabling hemp seed and derived products to be openly promoted, sold and bought as food in Australia . You can learn more about the history of hemp foods in Australia and the decades-long struggle to have the ban lifted.

Does hemp seed contain THC?

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is a psychoactive cannabinoid and hemp seeds contain very little THC. Australian regulations stipulate hemp food products must not contain more than 5 mg/kg of total THC. Even if you were to eat a kilogram of seeds at one sitting – something of course we don’t recommend and you’d unlikely able be to do, you wouldn’t feel any THC effects.

Does hemp seed contain cannabidiol?

As with THC, hemp seeds only contain traces of cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating cannabinoid. Food regulations in Australia state CBD must not be present in any food for sale at a level greater than 75 mg/kg.

Why is hemp considered a superfood?

Many foods may be promoted as superfoods, but hemp seed is one actually fit to wear that crown. Hemp seed is one of the world’s most complete sources of protein and contains high levels of essential fatty acids and other nutrients. Learn more about the nutritional benefits of hemp seed.

Is your hemp protein powder heavily processed?

No. It is made by cold pressing and milling high quality hemp seeds; a fully mechanical process – no chemicals are used.

What is the shelf life of your products?

The products you’ll receive will have a best before date of at least 1 year after purchase – but we doubt they’ll be sitting on your pantry shelf for that long!

Is your hemp seed sourced in Australia?

We searched high and low for seed that would meet our standards in Byron Bay, across Australia and the world – and we found it in Canada. You can learn more about our hemp seed here. However, we would love to use Australian-grown seed and actively encourage local farmers to contact us if they can supply a top-notch product (for which we will pay a top price).

Why add Australian native superfoods?

While hemp seed is bursting with nutritional goodness, Byron Bay Labs includes native superfoods such as quandong, wattleseed and kakadu plum to selected products to provide even more (and a unique taste). But we also have hemp-only products. Check out our range here.

What makes Byron Bay Labs hemp protein powder special?

Do you add sugar or artificial sweeteners to your products?

No – for sweetening purposes we use thaumatin. While that may sound like a synthetic chemical, it’s actually a low calorie sweetener isolated from the katemfe fruit.

Do you add artificial flavours, preservatives or colouring?

No – one of the (many) great things about Byron Bay Labs hemp food products is they contain no artificial colourings, preservatives or flavourings. They don’t even contain any additional natural preservatives or colouring, and the only flavouring we use in some products is natural vanilla.

Are Byron Bay Labs products suitable for vegans and vegetarians?

Absolutely – there are no animal products whatsoever in any of our range.

Can your product containers be recycled?

Definitely – if you can’t find a use for the jars, just place them in your recycling bin. By the way, the containers are also made from recycled materials.

Who is Byron Bay Labs?

The company is led by Max Sylvester and Nick Gatsios, whose vision is to bring everyday health + wellness to people through the use of hemp, and to see Australia fully harness the benefits of cannabis.
